Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction Treatment

Does stabilization splint therapy reduce symptoms in people who have pain dysfunction syndrome (PDS)?

  • Yes. Stabilization splint therapy reduces PDS symptoms (pain severity at rest and on palpitation) when compared with no treatment.  However, acupuncture, bite plates, biofeedback/stress management, visual feedback, relaxation, jaw exercises, non-occluding appliance and minimal treatment were equally effective. (Evidence level 1). Read the abstract.

Is surgical treatment of temporamandibular disk displacement effective?

  • Yes. Arthroscopy and arthrocentesis significantly benefited most patients.  However, disk repair benefits were not significant. (Evidence level 1). Read the abstract.
